ION Profile LP Vinyl-to-MP3 Turntable

This turntable made a great replacement for the 20 year old one I had been using. The turntable itself was very easy to set up; the included manual outlined the entire process. I did have an issue with the attached RCA cable being very short, only about 3 feet in length. I had to extend it using another RCA cable. The power cord is much longer though, and should reach the nearest outlet easily. The sound is very clear, even on my age-old system. I was, however unaware that the turntable has a pre-amp installed in it, so I was unable to hook it up to the Phono Input in my home theater system; I had to use one of the Aux/CD/Video imports.

I used Audacity to digitally record my albums on a Dell Inspiron running Windows 7, and the device was recognized and configured instantly. PLEASE NOTE that some of the settings may need to be altered, depending on what system you are running (the set-up guide explains this in detail). Other than a couple nuisances, this device was an excellent buy.

The turntable works great and is so easy to use. Plug in the power, plug in the USB cable, install the software on the CD, push record and start playing and it records the music. Then comes the slow part, the conversion. It takes forever to convert after you're done recording so be patient!
One nice feature is the automatic new track sensor. The software can tell when one track stops and another starts and will automatically start recording a new track for you. After recording, you only have to type the artist and album names once, then you just type in the track names and bam it goes in your iTunes all nice and organized. Sound quality is as good as you can expect from vinyl.

Mendini 1/2 MV200 Solid Wood Violin in Natural Finish with Hard Case, Shoulder Rest, Bow, Rosin and Extra Strings

I bought this blue 1/2 size violin for my 9 year old daughter as she out grew her 1/4 size violin (pink colored one). Once again was not disappointed with the Cecilio product. I could have bought a regular wood finished violin at a higher cost, but figured that she'll only use this one for a year before moving up to the next size violin and may as well keep it fun for her as she is the only one in her orchestra with a non standard wood finished violin and she love to play this instrument. Once again, remarkably for the price (about $50)this instrument has pretty decent tone. What keeps me from giving this a 5 star rating is that it was a bit of a chore setting up the bridge initially. But after getting it tuned for the first time, then the fine tuning by her violin teacher, it really has decent tone. My daughter has been playing the violin for just over a year, and we figured since she will use the instrument her old pink violin and now the blue one for maybe a year each, these color violins help keep practice fun for her and is a conversation piece with her friends and classmates. The case is a standard case for inexpensive violins, the shoulder rest that came with outfit is cheap and not really usable. But where it counts is the sound and playability of the violin where it is petty decent for the price.

ION Audio iCUE3 Discover DJ System

I've had the ION Discover DJ for about a week now and it's been a great MIDI DJ controller so far. It's highly usable with just the right amount of controls for basic mixing and scratching. For being mostly plastic, the device feels well built - with the knobs and buttons twisting/clicking solidly. The crossfader has a metal stem with a removable cap(!), and cuts smoothly.

The jogs are awesomely functional. They are touch sensitive (i can hold the unit upside down and activate the platters). They are also as smooth as butter, and amazingly sensitive when it comes to their scratch performance.

The current packed-in software (Mixvibes Cross LE) is great for beginners/intermediate djs, even some pros might prefer it. But the great thing about the Discover DJ is that it's also a MIDI device that can be used with any dj software that supports a midi controller (NI Traktor, Virtual DJ, Mixxx, DJay, and others), with a bit of mapping.

As either a beginner system or a backup for a pro, i think the unit is awesome for the price. no bells and whistles, just the basics with great jog wheels. I let my nieces and nephews scratch away on it, not worrying about it getting damaged. I plan on attaching guitar strap locks to it, so i can hang it around my neck and play it like a guitar.

Also for best results with audio performance, one should use an external audio interface with the Discover DJ (it doesn't include one - it's only a controller). If one has to use their computer's onboard audio, download ASIO4all (Windows only) for best performance.

CAD GXL2200 Cardioid Condenser Microphone

I'm a big fan of how technology can help the 'average man' do things that used to be reserved for professionals. A friend and I got to talking about a hobby we both enjoy, and decided to start a podcast. My first 'solution' was to buy a USB mic. After some inconsistency issues, I returned it and pondered going the XLR route after a friend recommended CAD mics to me.

Once the mic arrived, I plugged everything in and read some content from wikipedia as a test. I was impressed with the mics balance of clarity of voice capture and richness. The USB mics I was looking at seemed to offer either somewhat muddy richness (AT2020USB), or characterless clarity (Blue Yeti). I wasn't looking for a mic that distorted my voice, but I also wanted one that accentuated my voice.

As we've been recording our podcast, my friend and I haven't noticed a tremendous difference between the CAD GXL2200 and a slightly more expensive AKG mic we borrowed. I've since purchased another CAD GXL2200 so we have the same mics.

Behringer AT108 15-Watt Acoustic Amplifier

Hearing ourselves the way we sound to others is of the essence in music. This small, acoustic Behringer Ultracoustic AT108 amplifier gives the musician/singer the needed outside feedback to get things sounding right.

No one hears themselves the way they sound to others. This simple reality must be understood and somehow corrected for by anyone recording music. This is why performers in the studio wear headphones while recording and why a small acoustic amplifier is a necessary piece of gear for an acoustic guitar playing, singing song writer. The Behringer Ultracoustic AT108 acoustic amplifier more than does the job.

As the owner of eight completely acoustic guitars, I thought a lot for years about trying amplification. I probably never hesitated with ambivalence about any other purchase in my life. Much to my delight, together with a passive, inexpensive hole-mounted pick-up (the Seymour Duncan SA3SC Woody) , an inexpensive Audio- Technica vocal microphone and this Behringer AT108, I can hear a fullness and richness that actually makes good instruments sound even better!

At least as importantly, it allows me to hear myself more the way I am heard by others who will not hear me, as I do in part, from the resonations inside my skull.

One of the most universal and predictably shocking experiences anyone who records their own voice is struck by is how different it sounds when recorded than it does when they are singing or speaking it. The mechanics of this ubiquitous situation are not difficult to fathom.

To hear what those listening hear, you have to arrange things so as to hear the sound coming TO you, not FROM you. That is where an amplifier comes in handy. It aims your own sound back at you so you can hear something a lot closer to what an audience would hear.

DIY 14/2 Awg 250-Feet In Wall Speaker Wire

I worked in a home audio/video store for seven years. We were a small family owned business. We sold the normal stuff, plus very high-end audiophile equipment. They will hate me for posting this here. But, I don't care.

We were paid commissions and when we sold a system, we made more on the accessories than we made on the actual equipment. Typical gross margin on a stereo was about 30% - 40%, if it was not on sale. It could be 5% - 20% if it was on sale. Accessories are typically 80% gross margin! That means if we paid $20, we sold it for $100. (The only thing that was higher gross margin was Extended Warranties - the biggest ripoff in the world.)

We tested the cables ourselves to see if there was a difference. We could hear the difference between thin cable and thick cable. However, we couldn't here the difference between brands. We took the best $2.00 per foot 12 gauge Monster Cable (triple twisted, multi-strand, 99.99% oxygen free copper, with poly-methyle-razz-a-ma-tazz coating) and compared it to 12 gauge lamp cord from the hardware store. It's impossible to hear the difference. We used to laugh at the guys who would come in and tell us they could hear the difference between the cables. (We'd laugh at them, after we took their money!)

Copper is copper. It conducts electricity. You need good quality, low gauge conductor. That's it. None of that other crap matters. It's marketing and hype.

Numark iDJ Live DJ software controller for iPad, iPhone or iPod

It's been awhile since I've been this excited about new DJing technology. Ever since I purchased djay by algoriddim for my iPad, I wished for a deck or controller to do more complicated and controlled mixes. Then a few months ago I saw a You Tube video about this Numark controller........yippee....DJing gods heard me...lol. Saw a few write ups and looked at a few demo videos, not many details on the tech end. Then the $99 price tag looked me in the face and said, "Hmmmm". In comparison to all of the controllers/decks I've bought before, $99 "ain't much" so I pre-ordered it with the voice in the background, "You get what you paid for!"

So I finally received this controller. I opened it up and my first reaction is "Hmmm, ok." It's made of very sturdy plastic and doesn't weigh much. Now my first reaction to an electric toy is "Where do I plug in for power?"....another "Hmmmm ". Unless I missed something, Numark's IDJ Live does not have an independent power source! It feeds off the power of your iPad......"Hmmmm". So please before hooking this up, fully charge your iPad, iPodtouch, iPhone. In Numark's defense, I used the unit for about 2 ½ hours and went from 100% to 84%. So in theory I can rock a party for about 8-9 hours before worrying about charging up.

This unit does not come with detailed instructions, just a quick start guide. This was not a problem. The turn knobs and buttons were solid and sturdy. The cross fade was very responsive. You can do most functions on the controller. Things like looping, additional cueing, bpm adjustments, quick searches and total equalizer settings you still do on the iPad.

All in all I had a lot of fun with this controller. The nice size plates were very responsive and made scratching and mixing a breeze. One tip, cut off the scratch option when you're not scratching. The plates are that sensitive. Would I use this in the clubs?....naw. This is made for pool partys, bbq's, house partys or just to practice. What I am excited about is that this controller sets the stage for other developers to make one for the iPad. Maybe one day some DJ can leave his pc/mac at home and bring just the iPad.....nothing more.

Lanikai LU-21 Soprano Ukulele

I'm a guitar, piano and bass player, as well a private music teacher. I also received formal training in guitar-building and have been commissioned to build instruments for amateur and professional musicians.

I ordered this ukelele on the strength of the reviews here at Amazon, and I was pleased with this instrument when it arrived. I was really surprised at how loud this particular instrument is for its size. It's only about 19" long (approximately) with nylon strings, but it really puts out a strong volume and really nice tone. It has geared tuners, not peg-style tuners that seem to go out of tune easily.

Although I've never played ukelele, I was able to play songs like Brown Eyed Girl, Old MacDonald Had a Farm, and Do You Wanna Dance in about a 1/2 hour using the chord book that comes with the book. I did this drawing on my guitar-playing knowledge.

Also, my daughter, who is a piano player and 11 years old, picked up the ukelele. In about 15 minutes was able to play Row Row Row Your Boat, which is in the instruction booklet which comes with the uke. I see this as a good buy for beginners and a good starter instrument for young children who might like to move over to guitar eventually.

Two concerns though -- mine came with a couple small dents in the back of the ukelele -- nothing major, but I could see them -- looks like someone hit it on something. Also, most stringed instruments go out of tune for a short while after you put new strings on them. This one wouldn't stay in tune for more than one song when I started playing with it. I yanked on the strings to stretch them, kept retuning it and playing it, and it would still go out of tune. This is improving, and I'm trusting the reviews here that say it goes out of tune "at first". I'm expecting the tuning problem to disappear as the strings get stretched and the windings around the tuners tighten out any slack.
