Audio-Technica PRO24CM Stereo Microphone with Camera Mount

I tested it with Sony DSLR a560. Without the battery I can hear a sound like a working motor (quiet though), but I did not mount it on the camera, besides, the camera was recording at memory stick not on a HDD or like that. My guess, that this was an EM interference. Without battery there was mono recording - no matter what side from I would speak, the sound was on the middle in the playback. With battery in, the interference was 99% gone, but hiss is appear. Not much, but I can tell the difference in the quiet room or if you playing back through headphones, and - yes, there is stereo. When I compared the sound with battery out to the sound with battery in, the last one was more clear and a little bit louder. With the battery out, at the same distance from microphone (about 1 yard), the sound was like the battery was dieing: vibrating, more quiet and unclear. The camera battery was at 74% - more than enough to power a microphone.
Of cause it might be the camera itself. But camera manual says that external microphone will be powered by camera. Well, and it does, but microphone in any way should record the stereo. But stereo recording works with battery in only. I wrote about this issue to Audio-Technica. Here is what they answered:

"Although the microphone will operate using plug-in power, we recommend using battery power for optimal performance. There are no standards for plug-in power, so the voltage varies by device, resulting in inconsistent performance. This does not explain the mono recording issues; I have not had any reports of this. I recommend simply replacing the battery before important shoots; LR44 batteries are available at most drug stores, etc. and are fairly inexpensive."

Shure SM57-LC Cardioid Dynamic Microphone

Although this mic is now considered primarily an instrument mic, that was not always the case and I've actually preferred this same basic design for live vocal use since 1970 when I bought my first one which was then known as a "Shure Model 545 Unidyne III." That mic got stolen about 2 years ago, but remarkably was still working at the time it got boosted and I was still using it when I needed one with an on/off switch function. I've owned or used countless modern day SM-58's and SM-57's along with dozens of other mics over the years from all manufacturers. I have a fairly deep baritone to bass type voice and I don't need to get closer than about 7 or 8 inches to a SM-57. To me the SM-57 sounds similar to the $469 Shure SM-7 studio vocal mic if you put a windscreen on it and get about 2 inches away. I'd only use an SM-7 in a studio environment though because they are slightly more fragile and over four times as expensive. By design the SM-58's require you to get much closer to the mic to get a full range sound than with the SM-57's. I prefer the SM-57's over the SM-58's for vocal use because they sound crisper on the highs and they sound fuller on the low end. The SM-57 sounds more natural on vocals and never sounds muddy or muffled. The SM-57 has one of the most pronounced proximity effects of any mic I've ever used. If you tend to shove the mic down your throat you may benefit from the less dramatic proximity effect of the SM-58. If you are ever going to use an SM-57 for vocals I'd recommend buying the Shure A2WS windscreen with it. That genuine Shure windscreen fits precisely and locks securely onto the SM-57. The SM-57 will pop like mad without one. The only possible drawback to the SM57 as a vocal mic is that there is no model available with an on/off switch these days. I can't find a modern SM-57 with a switch anywhere. However, if you've ever tried using a mic when you forgot that the switch was in the off position it probably just became a liability. For my money, the SM-57 is the best all around microphone of the past two generations for stage use and some recording purposes. For studio vocals I'd use an SM-7, which really doesn't sound all that much different from the SM-57 when the built-in variable EQ on the SM-7 is set the way I like. The SM-57 and it's predecessors are to me the best all around microphone since 1970 and certainly the most enduring and durable. You can not go wrong unless you get too close with no windscreen.

PYLE-PRO PMDK102 - Heavy-Duty Aluminum Anodizing Dual Speaker Stand & 1/4'' Cable Kit

The husband of one of my fiancee's bridesmaids is a techno/club DJ and is flying in for our wedding, to make it easier for him I am buying the equipement the stands are a part of that. The cables work great, the bag is a convenient way to carry the stands and cables. The stands themselves are well constructed and I have put the speakers on them and jammed out in the basement, (quality check... lol). I think they will do quite nicely.

The deal looked good.. but I was also concerned that perhaps the product would be cheaply built to look like better products. I am very happy to report that was not the case. The product is of exceptional quality. The stands are extremely sturdy but lightweight, attractive, contain the safety locking pin (a must have feature). The stands alone were worth the price, throw in a very nice nylon gig bag that is also of exceptional quality and then you have a real steal. The bag alone goes for around 45-60 on amazon for similar product and it makes transporting these a breeze .. no more smashed fingers. Add to that the two cables and the deal is just unbelievable.

The Pyle PMDK-102 Pro Audio Speaker Stand and Cable Kit is a great value. Only one of my stands came with a lock-pin, but I've used them several times without incident. The cables are great, and the stands are sturdy enough to elevate my two PA speakers as well as survive set up, take down, and travel between multiple practice locations. Roadworthy? Of course not. But in my opinion, the speaker stands are certainly good enough for use in a typical practice environment. You won't find a better value on speaker stands and cables.

Lexicon Alpha Desktop Recording Studio

I'm not sure why the previous review was so low, perhaps that reviewer was expecting a 24 bus mixer with Pro Tools! Obviously you are not going to get anything near that for <$100! This interface is awesome. In less than a half hour, I had the software loaded (laptop running XP), and was recording tracks, without even reading any manuals. The zero latency really blows away anything that a standard soundcard can do. With the Monitor mix pot, you can control the volume of what you are currently recording vs. what you are playing back, with absolutely no delay that I can hear. Coming from an old cassette 4-track, this is a breeze. I don't know how I've recorded the old way for so long. If you are looking to mic a drumkit, go direct with bass, guitar, vox, and do it all live, this might not be what you are looking for. But if you are a musician that wants to lay down some tracks, perhaps 1 or 2 at a time, this is perfect. I'm just one person--why do I need to have 13 tracks simultaneously recorded? Take a stereo out from the drum machine, lay it down. Stereo out from POD, lay it down, etc. This is perfect for my needs.

The only drawback (if I had to find one) is that the Cubase software has alot of bells and whistle to it, some of which you have to dig into. So there is definitely a learning curve. This is a good thing actually, there are alot of pro options in the software that can create a pristine recording, if you know what you are doing. If you don't take the time to learn it and experiment, it could be a little daunting. I guess it is like playing an instrument :-)

Mendini 4/4 MV400 Ebony Fitted Solid Wood Violin with Hard Case, Shoulder Rest, Bow, Rosin, Extra Bridge and Strings - Full Size

My teacher was more than pleasantly surprised when I brought this MV400 to him for setup.. Which by the way, was nothing more than tuning the strings. The action, tuning pegs, bridge and sound post were all matched and aligned properly. My instructor was pleased to note the violin had inlaid purfling as well as a solid set of strings. In fact, the strings (according to his trained ear, not mine) are higher quality and sound than a "Red Label Super Sensitive" set I purchased. The bows are of various weight and quality, with one being a better option than the other in this starter kit. I do recommend purchasing a different rosin for a darker tone.

The instrument is not perfect, nor is it professional grade but for the beginning student (or in my case, the returning student) but a better value will likely not be found. I will be able to make it sing for a few years to come. My instructor labeled this violin as a "grade 7 or 8 level instrument." Not absolutely beginner, but for a new violinist with room to grow.

It meets its advertised quality but obviously isn't meant to be an orchestral instrument. With that, I give the Mendini MV400 4/5 stars for you or your beginning student violinist.

The violin is in perfect condition. I received all of the accessories as advertised. You even receive their Web page for maintenance and beginner's violin instructions! Wow! I didn't expect that! The case is very nice and sturdy. Remember to scratch the top of the rosin because it's smooth. You have to get it started. I did that and the rosin worked wonderfully! I made my first sounds on a violin! I am a musician, but I've never played the violin...ever! I am sooooo excited about my purchase. I couldn't be happier! I would write more but I want to get back to my Brand New Violin! You will be very happy if you purchase this violin. I know that I am.

Korg Pitchblack True Bypass Chromatic Tuner Pedal with 4 Display Modes

Al my other band mates were yelling at me to pick up an inline tuner for my instruments, so after prolonging my purchase I picked up this pedal, and I'm glad I did. My band mates all use the Boss tuner pedal's but I didn't want to spend $100 on a pedal that wasn't true bypass. For those out there who are unaware of what this means, there are two main ideas. When your instrument is plugged into the input, it is only active when stepping on the pedal. This was crucial for me because if you are running on a 9V battery and forget to unplug after practice, your battery would be toast. With this pedal its only active when you step on the trigger. Another thing about True bypass, is that when the pedal is not in use and is "bypassed" there is no change to the signal leaving your instrument. Other competitors pedals that are not True Bypass will muddy your sound a bit by dropping the signal level as it passes through the pedal.

Construction of this pedal is very durable, metal case, you could probably drop it off the roof of a building, not that I would try, but you know what I mean. The display is fantastic for low lit stages or practice spaces. It doesn't use little LED's like competitors, it is very visible, and has multiple display settings to make sure you are accurately tuned. The battery life is also very resilient with this pedal. And I use dollar store 9V's. I don't think there is more to say about this pedal. I bought it offline for a price that was significantly cheaper than competitors, and I probably would have paid more for it now.

AKG Q460 Mini On Ear Headphones, Quincy Jones Signature Line

I am not what you would consider a professional musician by any means. However, I have spent my fair share of time in the studio and have a degree in electronic media. After 2 weeks with these, my memory cannot recollect having heard headphones this good in...well, ever.

I was in the market for new headphones and when I heard that Quincy Jones was releasing a pair, I had to check em out. Then when I heard they were better than the Dre Beats, I definitely knew I had to get a pair. The only thing is that I was debating whether to purchase the Q460's or the 701's. Having purchased the 460's, I dont know if I will go forward with the 701's or not. These are that good. And as was mentioned in an earlier review, the sound quality seems to be getting better the more I listen to them. I went back and listened to some Isley Brothers, Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind and Fire, and whatever else I could find from that timeframe. Man, I heard things I've never noticed in those recordings before, both good and bad. It felt like the music was being played to me live from my ipod, and that is about the best compliment I can give. I dont know how the Q701's can possibly be better than these, but I intend to purchase them as well, although they may not be needed. The base thumps, but doesnt pound (although I havent run any old-school Miami bass through them yet). The snares are crisp, high hats ping and resonate accurately. Just a fantastic soundstage. I plan to watch a movie on my iMac soon through these to see how the surround sound plays out. They are really comfortable to wear and shut out most outside sound. I couldnt hear myself singing and I only had my volume up halfway. I actually had to pull one headphone away from my ear to make sure I wasnt just lip-syncing!!

The unique foldup design and the case are well designed. My only gripe is that the chord is really short. The default chord is like 2 feet and the iPhone-specific chord is maybe 4 feet. Coming out the back of my computer, I cant even lean back in the chair without running out of cable. I dont know if they make an extender specifically for these or if a regular extender will compromise the sound quality is some way, but its definitely something to think about if your sound is computer-based. These headphones I think are obviously made for use with portable devices but would not be frowned on in any studio in the world.

Shure SM58-LC Cardioid Vocal Microphone without Cable

The first rule of microphones is that, "No one microphone is perfect for every purpose." Rule two is, "Experiment with different mics in different applications to find your signature sound." I've used Shure SM58's along with their ancestors and relatives back to 1968. I primarily used them for broadcasting and recording spoken word content but I have used (and still do use) them for singing some back up vocals. The SM58 does one thing well and that is vocal performance when used very close to the mouth for public address use. Some people, me included, actually sound better and more comfortable in a live performance setting when using another mic, the Shure SM-57. The SM-58 is a very good vocal mic and for some people probably the best choice. For example, anyone who can not resist putting the mic right up against their lips while singing will probably want the SM-58. People with softer or weaker voices will want the SM-58. The SM-58 is highly directional and has a noticable yet manageable proximity effect (which means the bass increases the closer you get.) This mic does not pick up well from much over 8 inches away. The reason so many singers think you are supposed to shove microphones practically inside your mouth is because the ball type Shure vocal mics require you to get them very close or they don't sound right. On the other hand, the SM-57 sounds best several inches away from the user's mouth and works fine up to 12 inches away. While the SM-58 is certainly the number one professional PA vocal mic, there are precious few other uses for it because it has a colored sound with a prominent frequency response boost in the upper midrange plus a sound source has to be very close before it is picked up clearly. It works ok for conga drums and the like, but the SM-58 is about the last thing you'd want to use to mic a sax or guitar. Personally these mics are not the best for my mic technique or the basic nature my voice, but for some people they sound great. The live vocal mic that works best for me is the Shure SM-57 with a windscreen. However for other people the SM-58 works better. It depends on your voice and what you want the mic to do. If you have a very deep voice, the SM-58 might be the second best choice after the SM-57 which has a better low frequency response. One certain advantage of the SM-58 is the excellent gain before feedback capability.
