Behringer Xenyx 802 Premium 8-Input 2-Bus Mixer with Xenyx Mic Preamps and British EQs

The Behringer Xenyx 802 is a very nice control board for the price. It came promptly, and included a very nice manual in several languages. I had enough background knowledge to use this product out of the box, but for somebody who didn't, the manual could very easily explain it to them quickly and have them mixing in no time. The only real thing I noticed quickly is that the light signifying that it is on is obnoxiously bright, to the point where it is distracting. This was an easy fix, I taped a little piece of lighting gel over it and got it to a point where I liked it. I played with the mixing functions a little bit using several techniques and my results are recorded below:

The first test of this unit was simply trying it out with a few different medium quality speakers and seeing how it sounded. I attached an Mp3 player for input and hooked up several bases for output. Most of the controls worked flawlessly, the board didn't seem to be broken in any way. Distortion was pretty high, I messed with the gain a bit, and played with the various volumes and EQs until I got it how I liked. This would have been a bigger problem if I had been somebody whom had never operated a mixer before, it would've taken a lot longer to fix this using only the manual. The EQs worked nicely, the middle functioned particularly well, bass caused some distortion but nothing annoying; however, treble wasn't excellent, it made the high frequency audio sound a tad metallic and cut off some at the top.

My second test was also with an Mp3 player as input, but this time I used several different types of headphones as output. Distortion was higher this time, and with some songs I could not completely eliminate it. That said, the control room function worked nicely with a little less distortion, and I'm not quite sure why I would want headphones on one of the mains. The EQs did little to eliminate this distortion, as did the gain, but I could limit it using the various volumes.

My third test involved using the mixer as if it were mixing for an actual band. I had a Shure Sm58 wired on input 1, a Crown "Floor Mic" on input 2, a bass guitar and (cheap) electric guitar on input 3/4 , and a keyboard on input 5/6. The whole 3/4 and 5/6 inputs bugged me, as it really shouldn't have been considered 6 input. I ended up plugging the guitars and keyboards into the double amps because the doubles didn't have XLR which the microphones needed. That said, phantom power worked like a charm and the floor mic worked nicely. Distortion was considerably lower with my voice as the input, and I was unable to hit any notes high enough to sound bad (well...bad in comparison to my normal voice.) The Bass/guitar match up worked nicely, as the bass EQ barely affected the guitar and the treble EQ affected the bass. This allowed me some level of individuality, but not as much as I would have liked. Distortion was higher in both of the actual instruments in comparison to the microphones, but not in comparison to the mp3 players. This pleased me a little bit, but the lack of individual controls makes me wonder whether setting up this board to run a band would be a good idea.

My final test involved plugging it in to a full audio system in a real venue, and seeing how it sounded there. I tried out several different inputs and outputs, including but not limited to floor mics, sm58s (wired and otherwise), sm57s, a computer, and an mp3 player. The problems were approximately the same; however, with high power amplifiers I didn't need to use the amplification included in the board at all. Doing this, distortion was cut out almost completely.

Shure SE215-K Live Sound Monitor, Black

I would just like to say that when it comes to music sound quality, I'm spoiled. I have a sound system in my car that cost me a few K's, and as unfair as it may be, I compare all sound sources to it.

Of course, one cannot expect in-ear headphones to sound exactly like a car's sound system, but one can expect for them sound a little like it. At the $150 and below price range, these are the ones!

I've tried many, many in-ear headphones. Klipsch S4's, Monster Turbines, Audio Technica ATH-CKS70's and the Sony MDR-EX300's just to name a few. Let me say that each of the in-ear's just mentioned perform admirably, but, the SE215's do what all the others do well, in one package. The high's of the S4's? Check. The bass of the Turbine's and CKS70's? Check. The balanced sound of the EX300's? Check. Add to these features the replaceable cable, the perfect seal foam tips, durable construction, great looking transparent enclosure and what can I say? Ladies and gentlemen, I think I have found a keeper.

Buy these. It will be the best $100 you will ever spend. For those of you still using the stock earbuds that come with portable music players, listen to the SE215's and you will never go back!

Bought these se215 headphones to replace 6 year old E3 where the phono jack was worn from plugging in so much. Got them in April and use them 8-10 hours a week. The left earphone started cutting out and I would have to jiggle the rotating connection on the earphone. That would work for a minute or two then became more frequent and completely cut out. Now it is dead. Tried cleaning the connection and switching connections left-right right-left still no luck. The pivoting connection is horrible and moving connections are destined for failure. I will stick with a fixed connection next time. They do have more bass than the E3's but the E3's have more robust cables and connectors.

Yamaha YPT-230 Premium Keyboard Pack with Headphones, Power Supply, and Stand

I think this is a great keyboard. It has a wonderful sound, great features including the Yamaha Educational Suite (Y.E.S.) built in (includes these features: Listen & Learn, Timing, Waiting, Chord Dictionary).

I am betting that the other negative reviews of the stand are because it was not put together right. I had mine together wrong for a couple weeks then yesterday took the keyboard off and looked at it and noticed the leg that was farthest from me (behind the other) had the support rest on top with the longer of its two sides coming towards me. This makes sense because that leg is further "away". Then I looked at the other one (the leg crossing closer to me) and it also had the longer side of the top rest coming towards me making the little plastic tab stops not align from side to side. I took out an allen wrench unscrewed the one holding that rest on and then flipped it around so the little tabs on the ends align with the opposite support rest. Now the slot on the front underside of the keyboard fits in these tabs perfectly and holds the keyboard from sliding left right or front to back. It works great.

I do imagine the keyboard stand is a generic one as a much deeper keyboard could fit on it but the fact that it has extra depth does not impact it at all. I am glad it came with it!

Turned out to be perfect for me. I love to play Bach and other baroque composers, so since they wrote for harpsichord and fortepiano (fewer keys than modern pianos), I can play everything they wrote on this 61-key Yamaha right here in my tiny apartment. This model has all the rhythm choices and instrument voices you could want without being so automatic that it feels like a toy. The headphones are a bonus when there's ambient city noise or it's late at night. Other reviewers had difficulty with the stand, but they must have assembled it incorrectly. The keyboard is designed to rest atop the crossbars, not fit into the stand in any way. Try sliding the rubber sleeve supports in or out on the crossbars to balance the keyboard properly atop the stand. Also, make sure you have the height adjuster knob facing away from you as you sit at the keyboard and that the wider ends of all crossbars are facing toward you (measure the screw-hole to end distance if you have to). This will give you enough legroom when you sit at the keyboard. The two longer bars rest on the floor, of course, and the two shorter ones support the keyboard.

Buying the whole package with stand and power supply is the right choice: you have everything you need to start playing in no time.

Zoom H1 Handy Portable Digital Recorder

I own a Zoom H4N. I bought the H1 so I could do casual recording of live music while out in bars. The Pros: It has great mikes, like all ZOOMs. It does a nice job of being directional (and minimizing crowd conversations, etc). At one gig, it was set a couple of feet in front of us on the table, and picked up almost no talking. It is VERY tiny, and you could probably turn it on and stick it to a wall with some double-sided carpet tape (getting above the crowd noise). I am working out how to bungie cord it to a pole. Although starting it up take a full minute with a 16GB card, once it is on it is unobtrusive and fits in my pocket even with a mini-tripod attached.

The Big Con. The auto-level will drive you insane. After recording three different bands, I can say that unless I learn more than I already know, using the autolevel is useless in a band/bar environment. It will record at full volume for a while (5-15 seconds of the song) , and then dramatically cut the gain (50% or more) to the point that the recording can really only be used if you get with an editing program later on and fix the screwed up volume levels. I would not even give the unedited recording to the band, as the volume switching is insanely bad, IMHO, the auto level switching algorithms need to be reconsidered and tweaked for a less-techie environment. Perhaps faster and more gradual adjustments? But I am not a pro-engineer, just an amateur with enough knowledge to be dangerous. I have worked with other AGC circuits that are much more useful.

I am going this afternoon to record another band, and will try it with manual-only settings to see if that is practical. I suspect it will have its own issues, since bands tend to change levels from song to song. Monitoring is not practical, and adjusting volumes is tedious. This device is VERY sensitive to handling noise. I will post an update to this review if I learn anything useful about how to solve this problem.

I also agree with the other comments to get a RedHead windscreen. They are awesome, whereas foam windscreens are mostly useless. The door for the MicroSD card seems very fragile. I thought I broke mine opening it. Be careful installing it, and then never touch it again. If you really want to monitor recordings, get some good noise-isolation ear plugs, and forget earbuds or cheap headphones. I did NOT buy the accessory kit, since phones, windscreen, etc are useless. Buy ala carte.

My hope was to have a real one-button solution to recording bands (set it and forget it), and I am not sure this device meets that target yet. I have also not yet tried a calmer environment like a solo performer. That is in the plans for tomorrow. The AGC may work fine there.

Akai Pro MPK mini

If you have spent any time reading the reviews of the LPD8 and the LPK25, rest assured you can apply them to this product as well. The MPK Mini is literally a combination of the LPD8 and LPK25; nothing less and nothing more. Which is a great thing if you've been considering both!

This is my first MPC product but I am an experienced keyboardist. The Pads are pretty nice. I enjoy how they light up when you hit them. Like others said regarding the LPD8, they aren't as sensitive as some might prefer, and I'm inclined to agree. It tends not to register some of might lighter hits, so I'm having to get used to how hard I have to hit it. No big deal. It's also nice to have the knobs. They aren't as nice as professional grade knobs, but they work nicely for such a compact unit. The keyboard has mini keys and they are very sturdy. Some complain that it feels like a toy keyboard. Of course it does, they are mini keys! The keys are fine for their purpose of capturing ideas. I do not consider them performance worthy.

For those comparing this to other 25 key midi controllers, please know what you are comparing. There's a reason this is $100. It's simply a combination of two other products. Don't complain about the lack of pitch/mod wheels. The purpose of this product is portability and to allow you to capture ideas when you don't feel like lugging around larger equipment. For these reasons, I find it to be an excellent product.

Definitely pick this product up if you're looking for something extremely portable with acceptable mini keys and very playable MPC pads.

This product is very compact and extremely affordable. It has all the features you may want out a controller (except the mod and pitch bend wheels; but you can assign those functions to knobs). Speaking of knobs, for some reason the default program setting for the controller is set to have no control change (CC#) value for any of the knobs, this makes it seem to a first time MIDI user such as myself that the unit's knobs are non-responsive. Customer service is very busy/poor at AKAI/ALESIS's 800 telephone number and e-mail support seems very slow as well. All you have to do is change the program to the 2nd default setting and the knobs have values assigned, you don't need to return the controller or have it repaired.M

AKG Q460 Mini On Ear Headphones, Quincy Jones Signature Line

This headset has become the answer to my long quest for a high quality sound in a small, on ear headset. Based upon the acoustic accuracy as perceived with my ears which have many years of listening experience with a focus on blues, jazz, vocals, opera, classical, rock n' roll, folk, acoustic, ballads, C&W, Cajun, Tejano and more, I rate these headphones as a 5 star audio product. I compared them to Sennheiser 280 Pro, various Bose headsets, Bowers and Wilkins, Dr. Dre, Bang and Olufsen Form and others. I was amazed at how much musical clarity, range, brilliance, bass and presence the AKG Q460 provides compared to the other headsets I compared. It is important when testing these using an iPod Classic 160 GB - my music source in this case - to select the EQ, or equalizer, setting that is most pleasing to your own ears. The form factor of the Q460 makes them easy to carry, comfortable to wear indoors or outdoors (except for wind noise). I found they exclude enough external sound so that I can enjoy my music while someone is listening to a nearby television set. When I first tried this headset, I was blown away by the range of sound that came through clear and crisp. For example, bell tones, fingers on guitar strings, background talk between musicians, and I also experience the full side to side breadth of the sound spectrum across the recording studio or live stage. Very enjoyable and not expected in this price range. The cord is a super design and it can be disconnected from the headset and is strain relieved and well made. The ear pieces feel comfortable and are much preferred for bus and plane travel compared to ear buds. Quincy Jones must have approved this headset personally and he is a stickler for the quality of his arrangements and of his recordings - which span some sixty plus years and 27 Grammy awards. I have enjoyed his 4 CD Musical Biography on the Q460s. So, all in all, a great headset, but why did I have to take away one star from my 5 star rating?

The biggest reason is that the in line control on the long cord corrupted some of my music. This - I expect occurred when I was fast forwarding to the next song. Perhaps I accidently clicked the control an extra time, but whatever I did, there is no excuse for a product to corrupt the data in the iPod. The buttons on the control are tiny and my fingers are big so I may have hit two buttons at once. See photos. But, the end result was that a number of songs would play for a few seconds and then skip to the next song all by themselves. I had to delete and reload some 40 pieces of music to my iTunes library and to my iPod. Fortunately, I caught this early. If anyone can explain this, I will be glad to modify this review. I do not know the exact cause but it seems to be related to the long cord's integral control. The male plug also is different than that on the normal ipod headset as it has one extra insulated section. I cleaned up my corrupted iTunes files, stopped using the in line control, place the iPod on "lock" when inserting and removing the male plug and the problem seems to have gone away. Be very cautious before you invest in one of these headsets for use with an iPod Classic as AKG does not list them for iPod Classic use. In fairness, many iPod Classic users have complained on line about a similar song skipping problem, but have not blamed it on their headset.

Blue Microphones Yeti USB Microphone

This is my 2nd Blue product. My first was a snowflake for Skype use. I had a couple of minor issues with the snowflake but Blue stepped up and took care of it right away - the replacement has been flawless and made me quite loyal to Blue Mics.

I have been drooling for the yeti since early November when I saw a quick review on geekbrief. I purchased from Amazon a few weeks ago and it has been in use for about a week.

Its a solid piece of equipment and as others have said...its HUGE. I am currently using it at work as my Skype mic and it is behaving as expected. I am running windows 7 ultimate and it installed effortlessly.

Once installed, I began testing the four different modes and gain settings with a free but feature-rich piece of recording software. I spent a few hours at various distances from the mic; various gain settings in each of the four modes. I can say the yeti works as described. There are subtle differences/nuances to each of the modes and gain settings. I plugged in my headphones to REALLY be able to hears the pluses and minuses of each mode setting.

I should also say I am not a musician but purchased it for my extremely heavy Skype use (business and personal) and I am planning to make a foray into podcasting at some point in 2010.

Perhaps I bought into all the hype? I am not sure and perhaps I had extremely high expectations. The mic is very very good - but i was expecting it to be incredible.

My snowflake sounds really good and I was expecting the yeti to just blow it out of the water - don't get me wrong, the yeti is a better mic - no doubt about it - just not to the degree I was expecting. I have relegated the snowflake as my Skype mic at home and the yeti stays at the office.

Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Professional Studio Monitor Headphones

There are three cons to these phones, however. 1: comfort. Others have complained that the top headband causes pressure after a few hours of wear. I can see where they're coming from... and straight out of the box, I regretted getting these because they were so darn uncomfortable. But I used the tissue box method during the burn in period to loosen them up. Now, after 1.5 weeks of owning them, the headphones have loosened up and are more comfortable. The pleather is OK... and the padding isn't as nice as the Bose AE2 (the only thing I miss about the Bose AE2: they were amazingly comfortable) but I can wear them for several hours with no problem (other than sweaty ears).
2: Portability. These things are HUGE. I wasn't expecting them to be this large. The case Audio-technica provides is a soft pleather bag case. Being a student, I'm going to be stuffing these in my backpack often so I wanted a hard case. I have my hard case from my Philips and was able to fit the Bose AE2's in them but was unable to fit these behemoths. The M50's ear cups do fold inward towards the headband, so it's a bit compact, but is by no means considered "portable". (I recommend getting the coiled cable. As others have said, the straight cable is VERY long, decreasing the portability). They are also considerably heavier than the Bose.
3: Sound leakage. This can be a problem for me if I want to study in a library. The sound leakage isn't that bad... but if you turn the volume past the 40%-50% mark, others will hear it. However, the Bose and Beats also have major sound leakage that was worse than the M50's.

But the price for the value? Apparently these can be compared to $300 headphones in sound quality. I can't comment on that, but I will say that these are a ton better than the Bose AE2. The sound quality is a lot more crisp and clear. Bass is better, no question. You don't realize how crappy the Bose sound until you get your hands on these. Depending on where you purchase your headphones, you can save $30.
As for the Beats by Dr. Dre, you don't realize just how crappy *those* sound until you get your hands on these. Before trying these, I thought the Beats were awesome. After trying these, I tried the Beats at their demo stand and realized how muddy the spoken/sung words were. The bass was overpowering and the overall sound quality from both the solo's and studio's just didn't compare. You can save a potential $60 (solo's) or a whopping $180 (studio's).

You can't go wrong with investing ~$120 for these headphones. They are definitely worth the money, especially in comparison to the Bose and Beats line. Don't fall into the trap of their advertisements or endorsements. You'll only be wasting your money for a name, not for quality. (It's no wonder Beats and Bose are considered to be jokes in the audiophile community: they're way overpriced).
